DISPUTE OVER ADVANCES I A QUOTATION OF EXCHANGE THE VESSEL HELD UP. [ Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. The Union steamer Wairuna is held up because of a dispute between the company and the crew over the rate of exchange between New Zealand and the United States. The ship arrived on Saturday from the Pacific Coast and the crew were paid on Monday. While in American ports some of the crew received advances on their wages, allegedly on the understanding that the money they drew would be at the rate of 3.45 dollars to the £l, the rate then ruling. When these men were paid on Monday the advances were deducted, but the men claimed that the money should have been advanced at par. 4.80. When the cargo was discharged the men refused to sail until their demands were met. The ship’s departure was then postponed from last night till noon, but at 1 o’clock this afternoon she had not sailed. It is understood that both sides are firm.
