SUBSIDIES FOR SCHOOLS

SUSPENSION OF PAYMENT ACTION BY THE DEPARTMENT Subsidies on voluntary contributions for school work have been suspended for the time being by the Department of Education. The Wanganui Board was advised of this yesterday in a circular which the acting chairman (Air. E. F. Hemingway) described as “short and sweet-” Air. J. K. Hornblow a aid that there was a danger that such a move of the department’s part would kill the “goose that laid the golden egg,” in that it would kill efforts of school committees to improve school environs and so forth. Mr. Hemingw-x agreed as to the presence of such a ».Vigor, but pointed to the very full assistance schools had had through the No. 5 unemployment scheme. A great deal had been expended on labour and the committees had not found a penny. Schools that were establishing and maintaining libraries would be hit hard, of course, if the subsidies were wiped outAir. H. Oram: But the suspension is only temporary. It will last until the department has more money.
