“LADY OF SCANDAL”

COMEDY-DRAMA AT DUCHESS RUTH CHATTERTON FEATURED “A Lady of Scandal” will be showing at the Duchess Theatre finally tonight- It is an adaptation of the Frederick Lonsdale stage success “The High Road,” and is an all-talking production. The English outlook has been retained with the provision of an English cast. All the actors were born in Britain, and Ruth Chatterton’s husband, Ralph Forbes, also in the cast, is an ..Englishman. The picture weaves together light comedy and drama. Ruth Chatterton gives a splendid portrayal in her role. “Children of Chance,” coming to the Duchess Theatre for next Wednesday and Thursday is a romantic melodrama and is a novelettish story of a chorus girl forced to masquerade as crook. It has a conventional basic situation relieved by hearty comedy interpolations, backed by consistently light treatment right throughout. Touches of romance and frank melodrama, theme song by heroine, good recording and appropriate settings make it a good picture. Elissa Landi plays the dual roles of

Lia and Binnie, the latter role of demure maidenhood being chiefly prominent in the development. Her effective work is matched by that of Mabel Poulton in the part of her pal Mollie, John Longden as the candid crook, and John Stuart in the conventional role of Lia’s lover.

Sylvia Sidney’s mother was an art student before she married and Miss Sidney is said to have inherited this artistic strain. She is now heading the cast of Paramount’s “Ladies of the Big House.”

Simple Christmas cards were the order in Hollywood this season. Stars, executives, directors and writers have banded together and have decided to give charity the difference in the cost of lavish and plain greetings. George Bancroft, Paramount star, sponsored the idea.

Constance Bennett’s first starring picture for Warner Bros, and Vitaphone is “Bought,” a startling story of the loves and ambitions of a young girl of to-day who craves the thrills of high society, loses, and eventually gains a sense of true values. One of the most distinctive fashion shows ever staged in a motion picture is a feature of “Bought.” Miss Bennett is supported by Ben Lyon. Richard Bennett (her father), Dorothy Peterson and many others.
