MAJESTIC THEATRE. The final screening of John Barrymore in “Svengali” with Marian Marsh as “Trilby” takes place at the Majestic Theatre to-night (Friday), at 8 o’clock. Barrymore portrays the character of the master-hypnotist who won such fame on the stage a generation ago in “Trilby.” “Trilby” depicts with grim power the evi'" control of Svengali over the pretty artists’ model of the Latin Quarter. Through the spell of the sinister music master, Trilby becomes a great singer, leaves Paris with him and though pursued from place to place by Little Billee who loves her, and his stalwart friends Taffy and Laird, is oblivious to them until the weird magic of Svengali is miraculously broken. “Svengali” is Mr. Barrymore’s most dynamic role. It demonstrates the almost hynotic power of the art which made his ‘Peter Ibetson,” “Richards” and “Hamlet” so unforgettable. The part of Trilby is suffused not only with rare charm but with dramatic power by Marian Marsh, who makes her screen debut in the role. The difficult portrayal is done with an understanding which seems incredible in one so young. The flower-like delicacy of face and form which characterise Miss Marsh make her Trilby altogether lovely. “Mr. Leomon of Orange,” a comedy starring El Brendel and Fifi Dorsay, will be shown, to-morrow and Monday at 8 p.m. AMATEUR ATHLETICS The athletic stage is set for the big electric light carnival to be held on the recreation ground, Taihape, on Wednesday evening, January 20, under the auspices of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club.
