The touring Canterbury Plunket Shield cricket team commenced a two-day fixture with Hawke’s Bay at Napier to-day. The wicket and outfield were excellent. Winning the toss -’Bay made the satisfactory total of 244, batting for just under three and a-half hours. Kavanagh played a patient innings for 60, batting confidently against all the Canterbury bowlers. T. Rcaney also performed well; he was dropped before reaching double figures. Canterbury reversed their usual batting order and when stumps were drawn had lost six wickets for 182 runs. Powell played a forceful innings of 78 to compile top score for the day.
