CHURCH AND WEDLOCK

REVISION or PRACTICES LONDON, Jan. 6A movement for the tightening up of the practices of the Church of England with regard to marriages has been initiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr. Cosmo Lang states that owing to the increasing public laxity, pastors should be careful in accepting notices for banns. He has authorised the diocesan use of a list of questions submissible to parties requesting the banns, which includes notification. He does not desire the church solemnisation of the marriage of a divorced person whose husband or wife is still alive, nor of a person purposing to marry within the Prayer Book’s prohibited degrees of kindred, nor of any unbaptised persons. Civil marriage is, the Archbishop says, available for such cases. The clergy may’ seek advice from the Archbishop. When one of the parties has been baptised, the clergy’ must clearly explain to the matrimonial candidates the ideals and obligations of Christian matrimony.
