ON GUARD

UNWANTED COMIVIUNTSTS. POLICE MEETING VESSELS. AUCKLAND, Jan. 13. Efforts to prevent Communists or undesirables from landing in New Zealand have been renewed, and the practice which obtained a year ago of having passenger lists inspected by a police officer while an overseas steamer is in the stream prior to berthing at the wharves has again been taken up. For some time there has been undeniable evidence that the Communistic element in Auckland has been steadily growing, and men known to have Com munistic tendencies have arrived from Sydney to swell the ranks here. Realising the possible serious consequences of allowing undesirables to land without restriction a prominent Customs officer in Auckland has been instrumental in having the practice re newed, and all steamers from overseas will in future be visited by a police officer before berthing. Under a section of the Undesirablt Immigrants Exclusion Act, 19.19, the Attorney-General has power to refuse entry to the Dominion of any person considered disaffected or disloyal, or o! such character that his presence in New Zealand would be against the peace and good government of the Dominion.
