Railway Strike

TROUBLE IN QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT’S FIRM SI AND IP) Telegraph—Presn Association—Copj-rlght’ Received Nov. 24, 10.35 p.m. BRISBANE, Nov. 24. A general railway strike is looming in Queensland. The trouble began at Townsville when the local shunters refused to handle a truck of chillagoe ore because it. had been loaded by non-unionists. The shunters were summarily dismissed and the whole of the railwayment in the Townsville yard then struck, but the rail services have been carried on with skeleton staffs from elsewhere.

A mass meeting of railwaymen was hold at the Brisbane trades hall and decided to support tho Townsvilleites, also to demand increases in pay and a 44-hour week for the men at the northern depots. The Premier, Mr Moore has announced that the Government will afford the fullest protection to those who remain loyal, and will suppress intiinitiation. They will also probably reconsider the whole transport policy, which will mean the severe retrenchment of the railway services, involving the dismissal of many of the ringleaders in the present trouble.
