BOROUGH AFFAIRS The report of the Works Committee, which was presented at the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Friday evening, contained the following recommendations:— That, when completed, the portion of the Main South Road opposite Dr. Hay’s, b'- sown in grass seed and the beautifying of the banl adjoining Dr. Hay’s surgery, be left in the hands of the engineer.—The recommendation was adopted. That with reference to the claim of 17s 6d from Father Foster for repairs to his car alleged to have been caused by a collision with the borough’s motor-truck, the reports of the engineer and the driver, Mr McCarty, bo referred to Father Foster, and if he still desires to press his claim, the matter be referred to the council for consideration. In connection with the above claim the meeting decided to invite Rev. Father Foster to meet the Finance Committee and discuss the matter. The Works Committee reported having instructed the borough engineer to call for tenders alternatively for both hot and cold bitumen work with a view to carrying out this year’s programme or road sealing works by contract. Finance Committee The Finance Committee submitted the following report:— That consideration of the requests from Messrs F. XV. Somerville, Ltd. and Mr W. Howens for reduction in the rents of the muncipal reserves leased by them, bo deferred until February, 1932. That no action be taken with reference to the application of Mr R. Kilkolly for a reduction in the rent of the cottage occupied by him. That the circular letter from the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies’ Association, expressing its strong disapproval of the Government’s attitude with regard to the payment of rates, both arrears and current, on properties which have reverted to the Crovn, be supported, and letters to this effect be forwarded to the Primo Minister and the member for the district. That the letter from Mr J. Williams reducing the price by £lOO of a shop porperty, being Part 3, Block 6, offered to the council in June, 1931, be received and filed for future reference.

That the application of the Majestic Theatre manager for permission to screen a programme of pictures on Christmas night be granted, subject to the programmes being approved by the council The report was adopted. Domains and Cemetery The report of the Domains and Cemetery Committee read as follows: That the letter from the Department of Lands and Survey advising the issue of a warrant increasing the number of days to 30 on which a charge may be made to the Oval Domain for the year ending March 3'l, 1932, be received. That with reference to tho letter from the Amateur Athletic Club, the caretaker be instructed to prepare the tracks for the meeting which, is proposed to be held on November 27, and the dressing rooms be made vailable for the lady and men athletes. That no action be taken with reference to the letter from Staigs Amusement Enterprises for a further reduction in the storage charge Of the “Atlantic Flyer.” That the application of the Taihape District High. School for the use of the Oval Domain on Thursday, December 10, 1931, on the occasion of'the school sports, be granted. That the borough engineer be instructed to extend the water connection in the Triangle, to the Rockcry. That the caretaker be instructed to have the playing apparatus in the Papakai Reserve ready for the use of children on November 19. That notices be procured warning persons to refrain from i' ling bicycles in the reserves. That the caretaker be reimbursed the sum of 10s for spray used for seedlings, etc. That a letter of thanks be sent to Mr Spooner for the loan of the forest devil.

In connection with the request from Staigs Amusement Enterprises for a further reduction in the storage charge of the “Atlantic Flyer” the town ?lerk explained that this firm had asked for a further reduction of 25 per cent. Some time ago the council had granted a reduction of 50 per cent, in the storage charge, and subsequently the charge had been still further reduced by 10 per cent. Or. Loader remarked that the council had passed a resolution some time ago to the effect that if the “Atlantic Flyer” were not removed by a certain date and all storage charges paid, tho apparatus would be advertised for sale. Ho drew the council’s attention to the fact that the time allowed for the removal of the “Atlantic Flyer” had almost expired. The town clerk trid that Staigs had promised to remove the apparatus within the next fortnight. The report of the Domains and Cemetery Committee was adopted. Bus Proprietor Warned Mr C. R. Currie, bus proprietor, of Taihape, appeared before the meeting and was warned by the Mayor that if he committed a breach of the motor regulations again, his license to drive a public motor . chicle would be revoked. Air Currie assured the council that he would comply with the conditions under which his license was issued. GENERAL NEWS Advice has been received in Taihape that the qjueen Alexandra Band from Wanganui will visit Taihape on December 6. At the monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council on Friday, the electrical engineer was empowered to purchase twenty-five 30ft. de-sapped silver pine poles from Mr. H. Young, National Park, at a cost of £2 2s 6d •er pole. On school days the Municipal Baths will be open from 10 a.m. until 12 noon for tho free use by the Taihape District High School children and also the Taihape Convent School children. The Taihape Borough Council has

held over the question of painting the baths with fishoilene or whitewash pending an experiment with fishoilene being carried out. The borough engineer has been in strutted to have several necessary re pairs effected to the baths. Th chief stewards for tho Taihape Show met on Saturday to arrange the schedule for this annual event. PERSONAL Alias Joan Alaclean, daughter of Air. and Airs. XV. H. Maclean, of f J ’ailiape, left on Saturday to take up Karitane nursing at Wanganui. TENNIS NOTES Tho executive committee of the Taihape Tennis Club met on Friday evening, the president (Air. XV. 11. Fookes) presiding over a satisfactory attendance. It was resolved to call for entries for the combined handicap doubles; ladies’ handicap doubles; and men’s handicap doubles. Entries close on Thursday. November 26. Airs. 11. Al. AfacCalhim announced her intention of donating two crystal vases for the ladies’ handicap doubles, while Mr. Fookes donated two miniature cups for the combined handicap doubles. Both donors were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
