When the steamer Hikurangl was nearing Norfolk Island on Tuesday evening the chief officer, Mr C. W. Cumming dropped dead. Advice to this effect was received in Auckland on Friday. Mr Cumming was well known among shipping men at Auckland. He came to New Zealand as mate of the Northern Steamship Company’s steamer Ngapuhl in 1900, and later returned to England, to come out in another of the company’s new ships. He remained with the Northern Company for 27 years, acting as master of some of the company’s vessels. Later he was mate of the auxiliary schooner Hokianga until he joined th» Hikurangi in August last.
