BUSH MYSTERY
YOUNG MAN MURDERED CHARRED REMAINS DISCOVERED Evidence of a dreadful tragedy in the north-west of Australia is being investigated by police in the Cloncurry district. The charred remains of a human being, some in a bag and some in a lire, with part of the backbone chopped in two, have been found at Wallacaloobie, 100 miles from Julia Creek. It is understood that a stockman named Greenaway, while riding fences, came across a man camping a few miles away from an old hut at Palmer’s Lagoon. When questioned why he was not camping at the hut, the man, whose name is yet unknown, stated that he would not camp there as there had been a murder there and that the remains were in an old unused cattle dip. Greenaway, with another stockman, rode to the spot and found the remains of a human being of about 23 years of age.
One report states that it is not known yet whether the body was that of a man or a woman, but another states definitely that they are the remains of an adult male. There is sufficient evidence that the body had been brutally ill-treated and burned in three fires and that the charred bones had been thrown into an old dip and covered with bags.
