ORIGINAL CALENDAR
HELPFUL IDEA FOR WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEMBERS.
Always original in their ideas for Christmas this year the Wellington Provincial Federation of Women’s Institutes has compiled a delightful calendar which is to bo sent to all the Women’s Institutes with a request that members will buy and use them for Christmas instead of cards. The cost is small and the money will go to the federation and central executive funds. Each month of the year has three or four wise sayings attached —for example, March says: — “It’s not the individual, or the army as a whole, But the evcrlastin’ team work of every blooming soul.’ For April: “A merry heart kills more microbes than any medicine” (Anon.). May: ‘The wing of friendship never moults a feather” (C. C. Jahn). And so the calender continues with helpful thought for every month. The very first page contains a gem which to absorb and practise would not harm any of us. It is called “Going Up Life’s Hill,” and is by Wilhelmina Stitch.
If a body meet a body going up Life’s hill—to smile upon tnat stranger body wouldn’t be so ill. To smile and speak a word or two, wouldn’t be so bad; just a cheery “Hello, you!” might make the stranger glad. To speak a word and stop a bit along the weary mile; to know a’ joke and share its wit, might make the stranger smile. To crack a joke and sing a song going up Life’s road, might help another soul along, might lighten, too, bis load. If a body meet abody stumbling up Life’s hill, to lend a hand to stranger ami pull a bit, to use your strength for two, is surely—now I think of it—the thing we’re meant to do.
