Probably the most impressive toast at the Jubilee dinner at Patea on Tuesday night was that to “Patea’s Benefactor ” the late Mr. Hunter Shaw. It was honoured in silence, the big gathering paying tribute to a man under whose will the towns of Patea and Waverley had benefitted very considerably. In his reply Air. T. E. Roberts said that he took the toast to include other benefactors of Patea as well. He paid tribute to the scholarly qualities of the late Air. Hunter Shaw, and to his carefulness. It was due to his care that he became wealthy and it was from his wealth that Patea had benefitted. The speaker also reminded his hearers of the generosity displayed towards Patea by Air. Warren, of Auckland, Air. Shaw’s executor.
