SAVAGE CLUB EVENING

LADIES ENTERTAINED For the entertainment of their wahines and friends the members of the Wanganui Savage Club held a social and dance at the Elrick on Saturday night. There were about ZOO present, and the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. For the concert the chairs were, as usual, placed down one side of the room at the far end facing the musicians’ platform, which wan used as a stage. Before the programme commenced, Great Chief, F. B. Barber, and Savage W. Hutchens (chairman), in humorous speeches, welcomed the visitors. An excellent and varied programme followed and all the performers were generously applauded, encores being the order of the evening.

Songs were contributed by Mrs W. L. Burgess, Mrs Wills and Mr Howie; elocutionary items by Mrs T. L. Sperring; violin solo by Mr Will Hutchens; a quartette was sung by Mrs Spcrring, Mrs Wills, Messrs G. 'P. Williamson and T. L. Spcrring; community singing, led by Mr J. Pawson; humorous items by Mr Howell. The concluding item was a sketch entitled “Before and After Marriage,” by Mrs T. L. Spurring and Mr Eric Lind, caused much amusement. After the concert, a delicious sit-down supper, provided by the wives of the Savages, was served, being set on tables set end on end arranged in the lounge and down the* same side of the room in two long rows. Folding doors and dark brown heavy curtains hanging from the ceiling beams screened off this portion of the large room during the concert. As soon as supper was over the room was cleared and the guests enjoyed dancing to excellent music played by the River City Syncopators. Among those present were Mrs F. B.
