WELLINGTON TITLE AV II YTE DEFI: A T{f RANA AV AGG I Per Preu* Awoclation I AVELLTNGTON, Oct. 11. The Wellington provincial golf tournament was concluded on tho Hutt links on Saturday. D. O. AVhyte (Wellington), retained

the provincial amateur championship by defeating Rana Wagg (Hutt) in the final, 2 up and 1. Wagg went out in 38 to stand 1 up at the turn. Whyte, on the homeward way, made a brilliant 4 at tho 15th (515 yards), 3 at the 16th and 4 at tho 17th, where he sank a 20ft putt. In the semi-finals Wagg beat J. Goss (AVanganui), 3 and 2, and AVhyte beat J. B. Parker (Wellington), 4 and 3. The four-ball competition resulted in a win for 11. C. Rose and B. Jewis with 7 up.

NOTES ON SEMI-FINALS

In the semi-finals AVhyte won the first hole in 3. Parker was in difficulties and picked up. AVhyte missed a putt at tho next which went to Parker. Parker missed his putt at the next for a 3, but squared the game at the fourth bysinking a 30-footer. Tho next was halved. At the sixth, Whyte missed a short putt for a 4, and was 1 down, and sank a 15 footer to square the game at the seventh. Whyte found tho bunker at the eighth with his second, but laid a magnificent exposed shot dead. Parker also approached well, and tho hole was halved in 4. The ninth was halved in neat 4’s, leaving them all square at the turn. The tenth was halved in 4’s, both playing nice high pitches. At the short eleventh the high wind took both pretty pitches into the Dunker at the back of the green. Parker failed to get out and took 5, AVhyte taking the hole in 4. Both found the rough in tho right of tho ditch at the twelfth, and were short getting out. Whyte played a fine approac*. to within aix feet of the cup, but missed with his putt. Parker missed h 3-footer for a half in 5. AVhyte was 2 up. Both seconds just missed the nuuker on the right on the thirteenth. Parker put his chip in the bunker, and was only just out in 4, AVhyte taking the hole in 5 to 6, and standing 3 up. Parker hooked into tho rough at the fourteenth. and found the rough further on with his second. His shot out of

He took two more halving the hole in 6. Parker took three putts at the next. Whyte went on to win, 4 and Against Wagg Goss found his second ball from the tec out of bounds at the first and picked up. The second and third were halved, and Wagg won the fourth and fifth, standing 3 up. He was 4 up going to the ninth, but was stymied there, standing 3 up. He stymied himself at the tenth, but won the eleventh. Goss won th* twelfth. Wagg eventually won, 3 and 2.
