HOW TO SAVE

During all the past years of plenty the verb “to be” has been pushed into a very dark corner of our national life, but novy it must be taken out, and we will have to learn its conjugations. Many of us, so far, never have saved. This part of our education has been neglected, but that stern schoolmaster, life, has a disconcerting habit of calling us to the desk when we least expect it, and the examination has now begun. At the present time all girls in business should think seriously about economy, and one of the most important of subjects in the business girl’s budget is the savings account (says an Australian paper). Whatever is spent on food and clothes must leave a margin for this, the contingency account, and the amount that can be spared must be rigidly adhered to, and placed away each week out of sight, and therefore out of temptation. A savings bank account is the best, and this may be either one of two types, the ordinary account, or the special-purpose account. Perhaps the last is the safest for those who are tempted to make withdrawals, for when this account is opened it is opened for a specific sum, and cannot be touched until that amount is reach-id. A general savings account can then also be kept for savings that must be accessible. Many business girls see the special purpose account for putting away each week a small amount for their annual leave, and in this way are able to take the type of holiday that gives them the stimulus of a new and interesting environment, and, next to food and clothing, an annual holiday should be regarded as an essential 'in every business girl’s life. The great advantage of keeping a careful check of the weekly wage i: that one quickly acquires the saving habit, and it is sur prising how elastic an income will become if the purchasing power of every penny is considered.
