HOUSE ROOF FALLS IN
FAMILY’S LUCKY ESCAPE. Several tons of brickwork and lead, the debris of a roof collapse, crashed into a bedroom a few minutes afer a mother and her three children had gone downstairs at Oldham, Lancashir •, lately. The rrash occurred at the home of Mr. and Mr». James Hartley. The mother, Mrs. Ruth Hartley, had taken her children, aged nine, three and two. downstairs for breakfast when the roof of the room in which they had been sleeping fell in, completely wrecking tie anartment. The ro.of of a greengrocer’s lock-up shop next door was smashed in by the debris. A neighbour, Mr. Thomas Preston, fearing that Mrs. Hartley and her family were trapped, rushed to the front door to rescue them and was nearly jCTuck by heavy coping stones as they toppled into the street. The family, however, escaped unharmed.
