FREEZING WORKERS

MEETING AT HASTINGS 1 Per Preu Association. J HASTINGS, Sept. 26. The proposal recently made by certain freezing works proprietors that the board of slaughtermen be eliminated from works and replaced by men working in gangs by the contractors was discussed last evening by a very largely attended meeting of the men employed at the three local works. Under the chain system the men would work on a principle similar to that in use i.n mass production factories, each man performing one single operation. Speakers at the meeting expressed the view that the slaughtering trade would cease to exist and slaughtermen would become unemployed ami be compelled to leauc the unions, and that as a consequence the unions of which slaughtermen are ■ the mainstay -would become weakened or even go'out of existence. Tho meeting passed unanimously a resolution of protest against the proposal. Pleading high costs and hard times Hastings publicans last week unaiimously decided to do awav with the “shout by iho house.” Tho decision has apparently created consternation among tho freezing Tvorkers, who immediately began to discuss unofficially a proposal to give all their custom which is considerable to one publican on condition that he retained tho concession of the “house’s shout” and to black list all of the others.

Tho proposal was discussed by a largo meeting of local freezing work ers at Hastings last evening, but it was resolved that no action bo taken.
