SOLICITOR’S THEFTS

AUDIT OF TRUST ACCOUNT. FALSE DECLARATION CHARGE. ACCOUNTANT NOT GUILTY. [Per Press Association. ] NEW PLYAIOUTH, Aug. 19. Charged with making a false de claration that he personally audited the trust account of H. J. Al. Thomson, solicitor, who had been sentenced for theft of £BOOO of clients’ money, Lawrence AI. Al. Alonteath, public accountant, was acquitted <>y a jury to-day. It had been stated in defence that Alonteath had relied on another accountant for a certain amount of the audit work and Air Just-ic Blair, in summing up, said it might be accepted that an auditor had to have a certain amount of assistance. The mere fact that an auditor used a certain amount of assistance would not make it untrue for him to say he had personally conducted the audit, but the question arose whether the amount of assistance Alonteath received was such as to make it someone else’s audit. Apparently all Alonteath did was to scrutinise the balances.

A verdict of not guilty was returned in three hours
