Just on 11,000 miles were steamed by the Melanesian Mission yacht, Southern Cross, which returned to Auckland last night after an absence of 19 weeks. It was the longest trip ever made by the steamer during the many years she has been engaged in the work of the mission. At two of the places visited in New Britain the natives had never scon a steamer before and most of them were very nervous and declined to come on to the beach to welcome the ship. Lafcr some of them piucked up courage and came on board. The natives at these praccs had never before seen a white woman and when Mrs Burgess, wife of the captain, went ashore, she was rcgardcd’with the greatest astonishment.
