THE FLOWER GARDEN

THE FLOWER GARDEN. The pruning of all roses and spraying must be completed at once. The planting may be continued as late as the first week in September. The planting of wistarias, grandiflora, ampelopsis and other hardy de ciuuom climbers may be carried out, but defer the planting of the evergreen varieties usually grown in pots until next month. Clematis indivisa, the large-flowered New Zealand species, may be planted any time now. as well as the large-flow-ered deciduous varieties, and the smallflowered very vigorous growers, flaminula. Montana, viticella, paniculata and Virginiana. Wistarias require an annual pruning. Remove the long runners near the base and shorten back some of the laterals and long shoots. Bignonoia grandiflora also need attention. Prune back some of the projecting branches. Dahlias for very early cuttings should be removed to a glass frame, or greenhouse, to restart them. Cut off some of the surplus tubers. Place the varieties evenly in the frame and cover the tubers with fine earth, leaving the crowns bare. Take off and insert cuttings or chrysanthemums in pots, pans, or shallow trays. Place them in a cool frame. Propagation may also be made by cutting off the suckers with a few roots attached and placing them closely to gether in a separate bed. Seedlings of calendulas, stocks, mimulus, lobelias, coreopsis, grandiflora, candytufts, dianthus, larkspurs, antirrhinums, cornflowers and otlier hardy varieties may be planted out when the soil is dry enough.
