USES FOR KITCHEN SOUP
To prevent your boiler rusting, as soon as the water is emptied out on washing day, and while it is still hot, rub on a generous coating of soap. This prevents rust, and the soap will start a good lather next washing day. If you find a small mouse-hole in the skirting board or cupboard, choke it up with soap. Mice hate it so that they will not come through or make another hole near the first one. If there is a slight smell of gas from a fitting or pipe plaster on wet soap immediately. This will stop the escape till the gasfitter can repair the leak. If a ladder suddenly appears in your silk stocking rub some moist soap on it at once, but mend it before the stocking is washed. A common cause of failure in laundering is due to a sudden lowering of the temperature of the water. Fibres expand when fabrics are immersed in warm water, but if they are taken from the hot, soapy water and plunged into cold water the fibres quickly con- , tract and become hard. In this , sudden contraction the soapy substance, mixed with the dirt it has collected, is retained before it can escape in the rinsing water, and that is why after several rinsings a filmy grey sub stance sometimes clings to clothes. The soaping should be quickly done and the garments should not be allowed to soak in soapy water. The essentials for sue cessful washing are plenty of water of an even temperature, a good supply of soap, a quick washing and an equally quick rinsing. Always dry garments out of doors if possible. Never rub soap directly on to silk or woollens, but make a good soapy lather with soap flakes and squeeze the articles gently iu it.
