STOCK MARKETS

THE FEILDING SALE SLIGHT I'ALL IN PRICES [Per Press Association.) FEILDING, Aug. 14. Fat wethers and fat ewes values eased a little at the Feilding stock sale as compared with last week’s. The yarding was exceptionally heavy, 1400 head being offered. The quality all round was excellent, but this did not prevent a slight fall in the prices. Fat lambs improved a little, especially prime fat which went at 21s; prime heavy 16s 6d to 17s; good 13s 3d to 15s 8d; medium 10s lid to 12s; poor from 8s 9d; b.f. two-tooths, prime heavy 18s 7d, good 14s 9d to 15s; specially prime heavy wethers 21s; prime 20s 8d; very good 18s 6d to 19s 6d; good 16s 6d to 17s 8d; fair from 13s 7d. Fat ewes, specially prime hevay, a ! picked line, 20s 7d, pime 19s* 6d, good ! .16s 6d to 18s 6d, medium 15s to 15s 7d, | lighter from 13s lOd. There was a very heavy yarding of i dairy cattle, mostly heifers of good ; quality. The market showed a distinct j improvement. Heifers r.w.b., of quality realised up . to £8 17s 6d for best; good, £7 10s to j £8; medium, £6 to £7; others at £4 to j £5; poorer lines from £3 7s 6d ? second | calvcrs at £5 17s 7d. SALES OF THE WEEK The Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society of New Zealand, Limited, report as follows: Despite the fact that the butter market is active at 114 s and cheese firm, white 62s and coloured 645, the week has been a quiet one for private selling, sales in the paddock having dwindled away and prices having decidedly declined. For the first time this season our southern sales have shown a tendency to slacken off in sympathy with prices ruling in the northern area and there is now little difference, if any, in the prices ruling throughout Taranaki. Since last week we report a drop in the price of best heifers ranging from Is to 2s and in the medium to inferior heifer ranging from 2s to 3s. The inferior heifer, either small or low in condition being difficult to sell at all, and we are faced with a number of vendors forced to put their heifers on the market for unreserved sale and purchasers are able to pick and choose and obtain good, heifers at what appears reasonable money. The very best of the choice heifers, however, still more or less hold their own and sales were made in the paddock during the week up to £8 and £8 ss, but it has been possible to purchase at auction really good, useful heifers at from £5 10s to £6 10s. It is apparent, however, that the depression in the market is only temporary, the rough weather conditions and the severe frosts having made it almost impossible for local purchasers to operate, and as soon as the weather brightens and the feed starts to come away the demand will rapidly improve. Yearling heifers are being asked for the better class yearling. Fat cattle section shows a slight im-

provement, and the demand for fat cows is more apparent, quite a number of sales having been made during the week, fat heifers from £5 to £6; good fat cows, £5 to £5 10s, medium £4 to £4 15s. Isolated sales of fat bullocks are recorded, the prices being approximately 20s to 22s per 100 for choice cattle. Fat ewes are still difficult to procure, sales having been so few in this section that we cannot, quote. The best fat wethers, 20s to 21s, medium and good, 16s 6d, 18s 6d. Store Sheep. —Sales of ewes in lamb still coming through and the demand 1 quite good; hoggets command attention and good ewe hoggets sold during the week at Ils 6d to 14s; wether hoggets, 7s 9d to Ils. Prices for ewes sold during the week: Mixed ago r.w. S.D. ! rams, 14s 6d, 15s; 2-tooth ditto, £1; 4 and 5-year good medium ditto, 12s 6d to 14s 3d; medium 2-tooth ewes, r.w. Romney rams, 13s 3d. Store Cattle. —The enquiry for cows in calf at low money prove difficult to fill, most of the good P.A. and Hereford cows not coming on the market at present, and the money offering, £2 10s to £3 10s, does not tempt vendors. Sales of bullocks, 4 and 5-year recorded at £4 5s to £4 12s. Hawera Horse Fair. —In August a large entry of over 100 horses met an excellent sale, competition being good and sustained to the end of the sale, with a keen demand for lighter horses broken to all work. Unbroken horses did not meet with the same demand, and were difficult to quit, and ordinary sorts nulde from £5 to £l5. A special entry of Clydesdales on account of E. A. Washer, Okaiawa, sold well, the unbroken 3-year filly £36 15s, a very nice

4-year pedigree mare, broken to chains, £42. A special entry on account of H. Thrush, a good 4-year gelding £35; account of other vendors: Good useful horses broken to all work, medium to heavy, £25 to £32; lighter £lB to 23; aged and lighter sorts, £lO to £18; hacks and ponies meeting the usual demand, sold from £4 to £lO. Hawera Sale.—A large yarding of dairy heifers came forward, the market showing an all-round decline, medium smaller heifers being particularly affected, and being practically unsaleable. The market for the best heifers showed a slight easing tendency and medium heifers declined fully £2 in value. We were successful in disposing of three-fourths of our yarding of approximately 200 cows and heifers. Good cows were in demand and sold well from £8 to £8 10s. Best heifers were making £6 10s to £7 10s, with a few choice lots at slightly over that money; good medium heifers, £5 10s to £6 10s, and smaller light conditioned heifers, close to calving, £3 15s to £5; backward and inferior sorts, £2 to £3. Store cattle mot a ready sale on a par with recent offerings, 25s to 30s for m°ntv cows, poorer, 10s to 255. Pigs sold well, sows £2 Is; good storers, 16s to 325.
