♦ TOWN BO ABD MEETING The monthly meeting of the Bulb Town Board was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs J. E. Walker (chairman), F. A. Holland. G. D. Flower, M. C. Gould, J. F. Flynn, C. C. Price and W. Innes. The chairman welcomed Mr Price back after his health trip to Rotorua, and said that members were pleased to see him looking so fit and well. Mr Price briefly' thanked the chairman for his kind remarks. Foreman S. Howard reported on work done for the month ending August L as follows: All main ro'jds have been graded seven times with the county graders; metal has been placed on main roads; also on Critericai and Fagan Streets; metal has been screened in pit; a culvert has been put in at the end of the footpath in Johnston Street, and metal has been placed on footpath at the sale yards; the footpath has been metalled from the corner of Flower Street to Mr J. Smillie’s residence; ‘‘ chips” have been put on the road at Mansell’s corner; relief workers have been engaged cutting blackberry, gorse and wood on the Domain; also cleaning out gutters in High Street, Bridge Street. Daniel Street and Flower Street, the fire engines have been charged: swings on the Domain have been repaired. The foreman was instructed to place “chips’* on Bridge Street as far as the Court House, and in High Street up to Mr L. Homes’ shop. Mr Flynn stressed the danger of placing loose ; metal on the roads. Mr Mansell and Mr McManaway having had so many plate glass windows broken by' flying stones cast up by motor rs that the insurance companies had threatened to decline further insurance. The 11 chips’ placed at Mansell’s corner had proved satisfactory, and it was only right that the board should protect ratepayers’ property. The '’oreman was also in structed to attend to grubbing in John ston Street, and to continue the metalling of the footpath in Bridge Street from Mr Smillie’s gate to the vicarage. The foreman. In answer ro the chair man, said that the reason that Ceme tery Road was being cut up was on account of the heavy lorries carting metal from the river. He was instructed to clear the road of big stones, and to spread screened metal on it. The foreman said that Zion Square was receiving attention, and more metal would be placed there. A complaint, was received regarding a culvert in Upper High Street, which failed to carry off superfluous water, which was flooding jMr Dunn’s residence. The Works ComImittee was asked to attend to the matI ter. I Correspondence was received as follows: From the Rangitikei County • Council asking the Town Board to share the cost of tar-sealing that portion of Turakina Road from the Anglican Vicarage to the factory. The chairman, i Mr Flynn, and the Town Clerk were asked to confer with representatives of the County Council and arrange the matter. From Messrs Levin and Co., asking for a rebate of the auctioneer’s license fee paid, for the unexpired period. a license being no longer needed. —Refund granted. From Messrs Hill Bros., asking for a rebate of license fee paid for a lorry, which was no longer in commission.—Rebate granted. From NEr E. E. Hirst, postmaster, re proposed removal of telephone poles in I Flower Street, and asking the board to ‘ guarantee that the hedges would be kept cut and clear of the wires.—The necessary guarantee will be given. From the Manawatu County Council, quoting 3s 4d an hour as the fee for the inspector’s services to control traffic in Bulls.—A long discussion ensued, and it eventually resolved to ask the local police to take action against motorists speeding through the township, and to prosecute owners of noisy motorcycles. From the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board, notifying increase of charges for lighting from £lO 'l7s 6d to £ll 3s Gd, to cover cost of lighting the clock tower and the conveniences at the Town Hall, these not previously being taken into account. — Received. From Mr W. J. Ellery, ask ing the board to lower the culvert near i his property in Johnston Street, the culi vert being too high to carry off water, j —The road being a county one, the . matter was referred to the county. j Property transfer. —The transfer of ; property in Bridge Street from S. MaI son to F. W. Stevens was approved. • Finance.—Collections for the month were ns follows: Rents, £l7 8s; rates, £3l 8s 4d; library, £5 Is; Domain, £5 16s* total. £59 13s 4d. Accounts were passed for payment under the following headings: District Fund, £lO7 6s 3d; library, £2 12s; Domain, 10s. Town Hall.—The chairman reported that, as instructed by the board the Hall Committee had called tenders for the lining of the supper room and ladies’ waiting room, and the erection of a new sink. The lowest tender was ■ that of Mr S. Goebel. £l7 19s 6d. which ' had been accepted. The work had been done satisfactorily, and was a conveni- ■ once to persons using the hall and sup- ■ per room. The matter of ventilation I was brought up, and Mr Holland said that this was being kept in mind, but I the trouble was to find where a ventila • tor would prove most effective. Earthquake Fund.—The chairman : mentioned that so far the board had • not contributed anything to the Earthi quake Relief Fund, and such payj merits wore authorised by the Govern- ! incnt. Property Protection.—The chairman reported that on the occasion of the recent fire in High Street he had engaged a night watchman to protect adi joining property, for which there was an account of £1 —The chairman s aci tion was approved, and the account passed for payment. Mr Flynn took the opportunity to commend Mr Hol land and other townsfolk for the valuable work which they had done at the fire. (Applause). Works Committee. —Messrs Innes, Flower and Price were appointed to act for the ensuing month.

DOMAIN BOARD The same members then sat as a domain Board. The chairman reported that the swings which had been damaged by youths in the children’s play area had been repaired, the cost being borne by the youths’ parents. The culprits had been brought before the Court, and severely admonished. Tree Planting.—Five hundred trees have been planted on the Domain, and it was resolved to make application to the Bruce Estate for 1000 trees for planting. It was also resolved to fence off the area which was being planted to prevent sheep grazing there from damaging the young trees, it being pointed out by Mr Holland that sports bodies using the ground would require to graze it to keep down the spring grass. Tenure.—The chairman reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Crown Lands Department in regard to that portion of the Recreation Grounds claimed by the Maoris. TO-DAY’S RUGBY Bulls seniors to play Athletic at Bulls to-day have been selected as folows: Preston, L. Homes, Wereta, Har per. Cole, Crosland, Beran, Dwyer (wing forward), Cutts, R. Cameron, Le Leivre, Gallagher, Meads, Sanson and D. Cameron. PING PONG The following have been selected to represent Bulls in a return match with Stan way. at Stan way, on Tuesday next; M. R. Mansell (capt.). T. L. Mansell, H. Hendry. F. Ingram, H. Kearney, Mrs Mansell, Miss I. Walker, Miss S. Walker, Miss E. Simpson and Miss Minnie Kearney. Emergencies: H. A. Sigtai and F. Howard.
