INDIGNANT GROCERS
THE PROFIT FROM SUGAR ANGBY WITH MINISTER [ Per Press Association. I DUNEDIN, Aug. 14. Indignation is expressed by grocers at the Hon. de la Perrcllc’s statement re sugar prices. The president of the Master Grocers’ Association stated that when the increased duty was announced grocers passed it on to the public, but stocks were then low, there having been an excessive run at the last minute at the old prices. If the new duty proposal was defeated in the House, the public would expect an immediate reduction. The usual practice was to increase the price with the duty increase and the Minister’s statement issued nearly a fortnight after the imposition of the duty was most improper. It was absurd to suggest that grocers should make a refund.
