WANGANUI ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT ISSUED MEETING ON MONDAY NIGHT ihe fact that the annual meeting of members of Wanganui. Amatcuf Boxing Association will bo held in Messrs Silk, Haworth and Co.’s rooms next Monday night lends interest to th« annual report of the executive committee. This will be submitted by the prosident, Mr H. Hague Smith. The annual report is as follows: In presenting the annual report foi the past year the committee expresses regret that they could not stage a professional contest, but the lack of support for the 1930 championships, which were held at the Opera House and resulted in a loss of approximately £3O, did not leave the Association sufficient funds to stage a contest when the NewZealand Council rules provided that a definite purse must be given. Tho committee has not yet received the report of the conference, but it appears that the agitation to amend the rules to allow professionals to fight on a percentage basis was not successful. If this is so, Wanganui prospects for staging a professional contest do not appear to be bright. The committee, therefore, decided to mark time, but owing to tho fact that a number of boys in tho district were training, it was decided to stage the Wanganui amateur championships provided the expenses could be kept down to a minimum. Th? Museum Hall was engaged, no travelling expenses were paid, no supper provided and medals instead of cups were presented to the winners. In spite of keeping expenses down, with a gate of approximately as much as was taken at last, year’s championships, a profit of £5 10s 9d only was made.

The winners of th? titles were as follows:—Heavyweight, J. Adams, Marton. Lightheavy, A. Verran, Wanganui. Welterweight, J. McMahon, Taihape. Lightweight. J. McMahon, Taihape. Featherweight, G. Constantine, Wanganui. Bantamweight. T. Whatnaugh, Wanganui. Flyweight, V. Gordon, Patea. Paperweight, V. Gordon, Patea. In connection with the championships thanks of the Association are due to Messrs T. Hurley, E. Cole and J. Williams for donations of medals. -But for these the profit would have been considerably less. Although, as will be seen from the statement of receipts and expenditure, the credit at the bank has decreased by £8 12s Id. th? position is quite satisfactory. Outstanding accounts in connection with the Grime-Bloom contest, amounting to £9 15s 9d. were really a charge against the previous year hut had to be paid, and also amusement tax on the 1929 subscriptions amounting o £l 17s 4d. These sums amounted to £l4 12s ]d. which if deducted from the credit balance at the bank at the beginning of tho rear would have reduced it to £7 14s 3d. so that actually there ha® been a surplus on the year’s workin" of 17s 104. An invitation has been issued to the executive of the Military Boxing Association to attend the annual meeting. It is hoped that the two associations will bo able to evolve some scheme of co-operation which may do something to awaken interest in boxing in Wanganui.
