PING PONG AND DANCE The very heavy rain that set in early 3; in tho evening was responsible for the -' small attendance at the ping pong toursi nament and dance held by the Ladies’ -j Rifle Club on Wednesday evening. Mrs F. Mclntyre won the ladies - truphy, and the men’s trophy was won by L. Linton. t Music for the dance was supplied by / Mr F. Prentice. VALEDICTORY s During the progress of the ping pong - tournament and dance on Wednesday 3 evening, opportunity was taken to bid 3 farewell to Mr F. A. Dear, of the staff - of the Post and Telegraph Department, iwho has been transferred from the local - office to a position in Wanganui. e In addressing the gathering, Air J- - B. Me Knight spoke of the popularity e of Air Dear in both football and tennis ■■ circles, in which the guest had per- - formed meritoriously. On behalf of both clubs and of well-wishers in the ? community, the speaker asked Air Dear r to accept a wristlet watch as a parting f gift, and expressed to Air Dear the best n wishes of all concerned. i In response, Air Dear thanked Air McKnight and all good friends for the r sentiments expressed and for the hand- :, some token received. Cheers with musical honours were ac- - corded Air Dear. Mr Dear leaves to--1 day, Friday, for Wanganui. r GENERAL j Lambs arc fast making their appear--3 ance in the district, and farmers are hoping for a spell of mild weather. j Constant vigilance on the part of the - county overseer is required to keep the roads in a useable state in the district - over the river, and a gang of men is ■ continuously employed endeavouring to . repair the damage of the past month ’ and to keep pace with the fresh slips • which still cause trouble on some of : the worst patches of road. i The switching out of the local railway station for a period of the night ’ has made possible a reduction of one in the staff locally. The station is ’ switched out at 9.20 p.m. and switched in at 4.30 a.m. Tho Rangitikei County Council have commenced work on the cleaning out of the roadside drains in the town. A gang of men commenced work on Tuesday last. New culverts are being installed where necessary, and the foot path from the post office to the school is receiving attention. PERSONAL Air Trevor R. Tolley, late of the telephone exchange, Alarton, arrives to day io take up duty at the local post office, in place of Air Dear. Air A. <’ Mercer of the local post office, aL present in the public hospital, Wanganui, is reported to be progressing very favourably.
