Secession Sought
WEST AUSTRALIAN PLAN REQUEST FOR REFERENDUM PERTH. Aug. 13. A motion requesting the Government to take a referendum on the question of the secession of the State from the Federation was passed in the Legislative Assembly by 21 votes to 14. POLICE USE BATONS Trouble in Melbourne MELBOURNE, Aug. 13. Baton charges by thirty policemen dispersed a crowd of about 1000 unemployed, who had assembled at a Fitzroy house and threatened to cause trouble over the eviction of a family for non-payment of rent. The unemployed tore pickets from fences and were about to attack the police sergeant and bailiff when the police cars arrived. JUDGES AND SALARIES SOME REFUSE A CUT SYDNEY, Aug. 12. Tie Prime '.Minister wrote to the High Court. Judges and invited them to vol tecr a 25 per cent reduction in salaries. The Chief Justice (Sir Frank GavanDuffy) ar 1 Justices Starke and Evatt declined, but expressed willingness to forgco £4 4s a day travelling allowance when away from their own States. The other three Judges agreed, to tho salary cut. The objectors’ reason was that thfy were not prepared to weaken that section of the constitution which provided that nothing must he done to diminish Judges’ salaries during the continuance in office.
