STRANGE FISH CAUGHT
A SPECIES OF SQUID DISCOVERY NEAR OPOTIKI OPOTIKI, Aug. 12. A strange fish was caught by an Opotiki resident at the Hukuwai Beach recently. The fish was alive when caught in a shallow pond on the beach. It was BOin. long, with eight arms 7in. long and two 12in. long. The body was shaped not unlike that of a gurnard and the colouring was similar but much brighter. At the tail were two large fins 7in. wide. It was identified by Air Francis, an authority on fish, who is visiting Opotiki, as a squid of a species which is common on the New England coast of the United States, but, so far as he know, it had not been reported in New Zealand waters before. The fish was sent to the Dominion Museum.
