MANAWATU GORGE ROAD

FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS. Traffic has been delayed temporarily on the Manawatu Gorge Road dur ing the past two days owing to workmen clearing away rock from the road. It was found necessary to dislodge a large quantity of rock at a point which was considered dangerous and unstable and hundreds of tons of rock have been shifted. During the past two months there have been no fewer than 39 slips in the. Gorge. The overseer of the Gorge works, Mr W. Brockie, attributes the large number of slips to the continual heavy rain experienced this winter. The new bridge is now in constant use and five stone piers are all that remain of the old structure. The woodwork of the old bridge was J is mantled where practicable, and tho timber which it was considered too dangerous to shift was set- fire to. There are still several workmen employed at the bridge and these are engaged in clearing away material. Ashhurst Bridge It has been decided to build a new decking on the Ashhurst Bridge and the timber for the work is now on the scone. The surface on the bridge is considered by motorists as being very bad and the knowledge that the bridge is to bo re-decked will bo appreciated
