PUKEKOS CAUSE DAMAGE
RETALIATION IN OTAGO A report that pukekos were causing considerable damage in the Taieri district, Otago, came before the executive of the New Zealand Native Bird Protection Society in Wellington last week from the secretary of the Otago branch. It vx as suggested that a short open season bo declared in a well-defined and strictly limited area. It was decided to reply stating that it was presumed the damage was to crops newly germinated. The executive was of the opinion that the situation could be met by farmers applying for permits to shoot, and it was understood that a number of applications had already been made. It xvas thought that that method would be just as efficacious as declaring a local open season.
