RAETIHI

"CHEES,-UP WEEK.” The Raetihi Chamber of Commerce decided to hold a “ Cheer-Up ” Week during this month. Correspondence was entered into between members of the Chamber and business people in town where “Welcome Week” and such like periods had been held and it was decided that Raetihi should hold a series of entertainments free to all. , It was considered that instead of . I spending money on decorations in j shops or coloured light in the streets, ! etc., some practical form of enjoyI ment should be provided. Several j schemes have been considered and al- ! tercd, but on Tuesday finality was ' reached at a mooting of tho Chamber and others. Mr A. E. Willoughby was in the chair. It was agreed that the programme submitted by the sub-committee be adopted. This provided for a picture entertainment with community singing on Tuesday. August 25, starting at 8 o’clock. On Wednesday, skating will be provided for young people of school age in the afternoon and at night there will be skating forjidults. The skates will be provided free. On the following evening, Thursday, Aug. 27, there will be a card party. Euchre, 500, and bridge will bo played and small prizes will be given to the win- ! ners. On Friday afternoon there will be a picture matinee for the benefit of young people and parents who are unable to get out in the evening. At night community singing and pictures will be presented, when a first-class programme will be provided. Saturday will be a free day and as it is late shopping night, no entertainment has I been arranged bui the tai kies will be ion as usual. A concert will end the i series on Sunday night when Mr E. I A. Eastman has undertaken to supply a sacred programme to be rendered by i the Methodist Church choir and the Maori Church choir and friends. 1 There will not be any charge for i admission, nor the use of skates, nor j for any other thing. Everything is ! free for ail. The members of the | Chamber of Commerce and the busiI ness people are bearing the expense. I Any surplus funds will be handed to J the Community Committee. The after- ! noon programmes have been selected ■ for the benefit, especially of children lin the country. Motorists will be ap- ! pealed to assist by giving any chilI dren a lift. j It is felt that by bringing the people I together at an entertainment, more I real enjoyment will be provided than spending money on decorations, coli oured lights, competitions, etc. I I Scouts have offered to act as ushers, ’ etc., and the Fire Brigade will be I asked to provide patrols. Owing to the school holidays it was ' found impossible to arrange transport I but it is hoped that motor-car owners in country districts will co-operate by I bringing in children to the matinee. ' The Chamber of Commerce and the I business people are bearing all the expenses and everything is free for all.
