The alarm was received at 3 a.m. Willing helpers formed a bucket brigade, and after a big fight managed to save tho timber stacks around tho mill. It was impossible to save tho mill. This was completely destroyed. A number of trucks on the rail, containing seasoned timber ready for consignment to Napier, were burnt. Tho insurances are £2OOO, but it is believed the loss will be very considerable. Cutting at the mill was ncariy completed, and it was expected to close down in some four or five months’ time. The fire was a particularly unfortunate happening at tho present time, and will mean that more men will be out of work when there are an exceptionally large number of unemployed in tho district.
