HUNTERVILLE

PERSONAL. Mrs Ken. Duncan is visiting New Plymouth. Mr Ray Dalziell, who has been in Wharo Ora Hospital, returned to his parents’ home on Saturday. At a meeting of directors of the Rata Dairy Co. on Saturday, Mr R. G. Daiziell was re-elected chairman for the 18th year in succession. Mr R. Irwin, of Durie. Hill, Wanga nui. has been seriously ill for the past seven weeks. His many friends will be pleased to learn he is now making good recovery. The, engagement, is announced of Edna May (Bobby), second daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Stace, of Woodville, to Ernest L., youngest son of Mr and the late Mrs James Wilson. Hunterville. At the annual meeting of the Rata Dairy Co. on Saturday tho chairman (Mr R. G. Dalziell) said he would like appreciation recorded of the valuable work of Mr W. Hart and Mr E. R. Ruebe. Mr Hart has been a director for 21 years and was not seeking re-elec-tion. He had always taken a keen interest in the factory and suppliers had been fortunate in having his nervier's. Mr Ruebe had represented Marangai area for 13 years, and he reserved the appreciation of the company. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The ordinary monthly meeting of Hunterville School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs. R. M. S. Jones (chairman), W. G Cunningham, W. O’Brien, W. J. Whyte. Apologies were received from Messrs G. Stratford, R. Dukeson, and Dr. Pitcaithly. Mr C. C. Southey (headmaster) also attended. Accounts amounting to £6 7s 8d were passed for payment. A statement of accounts showed a debit balance of £ll 17s 2d in the general account; debit £8 4s 3 1 in the dental account; sports fund credit 5s Id; improvement fund, credit £36 Is 7<l. The chairman said £2l was due from the board next month. The headmaster reported the r oll number at 172 and attendance as 151.6. Wet weather reduced the attendance. Mr Roydhouse and Miss Partridge had visited the school during the month Cocoa was being supplied to the child ren at lunch time. The children’s concert showed a credit balance of £3 2s 6d, and a vote of thanks was accorded the teachers. A vote of thanks was accorded tne ladies of the committee and other ladies who assisted, supplied cakes, etc., fnr the basketball tournament. Mr Whyte said the fence required repairing where the slip caused damage, and he suggested that more trees be planted on the boundary of the horse pad dock. It was decided to inspect the site with a view to having the work done. Messrs Cunningham and Dukeson were appointed a visiting committee. A circular in reference to Arbor Day was received, planting to be done before the middle of September.

Mr R. G. Dalziell presided and introduced Mr York, president of the Palmerston North Junior Reform League, and Mr Tilton-Mist, Reform organiser, who delivered addresses on the Junior Reform League and political situation respectively. At the conclusion of the addresses a motion moved by Mr M. L. G. Folins ' and seconded by Mr W. Cook, that, a I branch be formed in Hunterville was . carried. It was decided to hold a meeting on Thursday night to definitely form a branch, and arrange to hold a dance in the near future. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Huntervillc branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Plunket Building on Saturday. Those present were: Mesdames | Butement, Simpson, Duncan, P. Weston, W. IVilson, Thompson. Apologies were received from Mesdames J. Howie, Fergusson, Bull. Cunningham. The nurse’s report for July was:— Three new cases enrolled this month; visits paid to home, 1; visitors to the rooms, adoults 38, babies 34, children 9. 'Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a most successful shop in Messrs Dalgctv and Coy’s building on Saturday, whmi the proceeds swelled the Hunterv’!’.-* branch of the community chest to the extent of £8 5s Cd. The iced cake was won by Miss F. Shackleton and Mr Leslie Lambert, both guessing 81bs 50z., half an ounce less than the, correct weight. Those in charge were:—Mesdames P. Weston (President), Morrison, Shackleton. Abel, Dalziell, W. Wilson an! Scntt-Maundre]]. Thanks arc due to all who assisted in any way, BASKETBALL. The weather conditions could not have been improved on for the basket- , ball tournament, which was held nt the local school grounds on Saturday, bright sunshine making a most pleasant day. ’ Eleven teams took part in the gam-s, ’ players being present from Bulls. Tutaenui. Rata, Ohingaiti, and Hunterville, and keen sport and competition was witnessed. The games were all ( bright and fast, the girls showing good form and keenness in the game. The tournament was organised by the teachers of the various schools and arrangements well in hand saw the proceedings go through without a hitch. Lunch and afternoon tea was dispensed by the committeemen’s wives. At tho conclusion of the sports an anonymous gift of eighteen egg cups was presented to the two winning ■ teams. Ohingaiti B 0; Hunterville C 17 v. Rata B 1; Ohingaiti A 4 v. Rata A 3. (The.vj teams drew and playing extra time Ohingaiti added a further point). Ohingaiti B 8 v. Rata B 0; Hunterville A 13 v. In addition to the basketball matches other competitive games were played for which points were awarded, and a total being taken over all sports. The Mangaonoho School children held their annual fancy dress dance in the Poukiore Hall last Friday, tho children ot the Poukiore School also joining i*. From start to finish the function wM B splendid success, socially and financially. The hall had been tastefully decorated with greenery and the school colours in red and brown streamers, whilst the floor, by the time the adults were in full swing, proved a trifle too fast. A pleasing feature of the affair was the fitting in of dances for adults only, after the children had danced four or five times, especially as the evening was very cold. Supper catered for by the Nonpareil and Mr Taylor, was a much appreciated item on the programme. Beautifully and expeditiously served, the large crowd did ample justice to the viands provided. The thanks of the committee are especially tendered to those ladies who so generously gave their services.
