EQUAL TO JAPANESE SHOCKS SEISMOGRAPHS AT SYDNEY [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received Aug. 11, 9.40 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 11. The Sydney and Riverview observatories to-day recorded an earthquake described as equal in intensity to the Japanese ’quake of September, 1923. The Riverview authorities estimate that the scene is nearly 7000 miles distant, possibly along the Pacific coast of America. The seismograph record began at 7.30 this morning indicating a severe disturbance, and a second wave began at 8 a.m. to 8.30. At the Sydney Observatory tho disturbance moved the instrument through the limit of its range. The tremors were more severe than Saturday’s and continued till 11 o’clock.) A later message states that the Sydney observatory is of the opinion that tho disturbance occurred over 11,000 miles from here, probably near the Azores or Cape Verde. It is regarded as possible that the shock was purely a submarine disturbance, but if it has occurred near habitation it will involve a big loss of life. No foreign cables so far have been received on the subject.
