| THE KAITOKE BRANCH I Mrs Pearson presided over the monthI ly meeting hold by the Kaitoke WoI men’s Instittue in the hall last Thurs- > day. The meeting took the form of a | children’s competitions and proved a • great success. The young folks entered into the various competitions with great keenness with the result that there was a fine display of woodwork, sewing, raffia and wool work. In the wood-work class for elder boys the first prize was won by Alec Pearson, with Francis Christmas second and Melville Prichard third. Pillow-case sewi ing for elder girls resulted in May ■ Pearson winning the first prize, Mavis I Lynch second and June O’Shhunersy third. Handkerchief sewing for small : I girls, Colleen Christmas 1, Eileen Lynch I I 2, N. Fowler 3. Raffia work for small I boys, George Church 1, Gordon Prichard 'I 2, Billy Mclntyre 3. There were two classes in wool work for tiny tots, the first was won by Patricia O’Shannersy, with June Christmas second, and in the other class, June Pearson came first . and Bob Christmas second. ■ Mrs Boustield, who judged the sewing ’ said that it was very difficult ot place the winners as all the sewing was ncat- ’ ly done. She congrautlatcd the childl ren on their work, and special mention was made of the raffia trays worked by the smaller boys. ‘ During the afternoon Miss Burgess’ pupils gave a folk dance which was ’ much appreciated and games and com ’ petitions were enjoyed. Novelty paper hats were distributed, the wearing of which added to the enjoyment of the children. The awarding of the prizes to the young folk who had entered for the ’ competitions was the special attraction ’ of the afternoon. The children receiv- ' cd very nice prizes, many of them being ’ donated by the members. ’ Miss Burgess was presented with a ’ piece of crystal ware in appreciation of her help in making the afternoon such ’ a success. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Bousfield for kindly consenting to judge the sewing, to Mr Griffen for judging the wood-work and to Mrs Pearson for organising the function. Before afternoon tea was served, Mrs ' Bousfield took the opportunity to thank ' all who had helped to make the after- ( noon successful. Afternoon tea was supplied by visit- ’ ing mothers and members of the Institute. Miss Olds (secretary), in a brief ’ speech, said they regretted that they ‘ had omitted to invite the fathers to J join in the fun. The singing of the National Anthem t brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. ’ The members are to take charge of 1 the next meeting which will be held in September, and plans arc being made to 1 make the afternoon equally as success- : ful as the one held last week. 2 Card Circle. On Saturday evening the Wanganui ■ Croquet Club card circle held a pleasant ■ evening in Dustin’s rooms, when games I were enjoyed by a good attendanee of players. The prize for the evening - was won by Miss Warnock. On account i of other attractions the usual Saturday : night gathering will not take place, but , the Thursday party will be held as usual.
