RAETIHI BRANCH LINE

VIGILANCE COMMITTEE (Own Correspondent) RAETIHI, Aug. 10. At a meeting of the Ractihi Branch Line Vigilance Committee, held in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday, Mr H. W. Littlewood, chairman, presiding, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“That the Government be urged to intro-l r■> legislation which will prevent the compcf I ion with the Raetihi branch lino railway service, namely the transportation of goods between Wellington, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Raetihi and Ohakune. ” It was decided to ask tho local bodies to join in calling a public, mooting to consider the matter. Time Inopportune. At the meeting of tho Waimarino County Council on Saturday Mr J. H. Lucas, secretary of the Raetihi Branch Lino Vigilance Committee, wrote enclosing a copy of tho resolution passed at a meeting of the committee. Tho committee asked that tho resolution bo put before the County Council, and if carried, to be signed and returned. Tho reason for tho resolution was the curtailment of the service of tho branch lino to one train per day. It was also suggested, ami the Vigilance Committee desired that a public mooting be convened, to bring the matter before tho public, ami it. was suggested that tho mooting bo. hold in the Cou’itv Chambers on Tuesday, 18th inst.. subject to the consent of tho Chamber of Commerce and the Council. Permision was asked to use the name of the chairman as one of tho conveners of tho mooting. It was considered bv councillov that the time was inopportune to take any action while the Transport Bill was before Parliament, ami that the Railways Board should be given a chance to operate before any appeal was made to tho Government.
