MOTOR ACCIDENT. Whilst driving his car from Horopito to Raetihi on Saturday evening Mr 0. Owens, blacksmith, Horopito, met a motor cycle near Mr T. Berry’s residence on the Valley Road and a collision occurred between the two vehicles. Mr Albert Rjoska was the driver of the motor cycle and his brother was seated behind him. The mishap happened at about 6.30 p.m. The driver of the motor cycle was severely injured and was taken at one to the Raetihi Hospital for medical attention, where it was found his leg was broken. His brother escaped with minor bruises. GENERAL. Last week Mrs R. Jennings gave a kitchen afternoon in honour of Miss C. Henderson, who is to be married next month. Mrs McPherson won a competition, solos were given by Mrs G. Stewart and Miss Joyce Reynolds and a recitation by Miss Nancy Ciochetto. A splendid array of kitchen articles were given to the bride elect. WALMARINO COUNTY MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Waimarino County Council was held at the County Offices, Raetihi, on Saturday, when there were present, Crs. C. H. Ball (chairman), H. A. Wright, G. J. Goldfinch, D. J. Berry, G. Price, D. H. Strachan, A. S. Ashmore, the county engineer. Mr IL L. Hogg, and the county clerk, Mr A. Mabbott. Settlers on the Mangapurua Special Loading District wrote approving of the expediture incurred on the Ohura road metalling, whie’ was being sent on to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, in order that the accrued revenue ' the district may be paid over to the Council. The Treasury, Wellington, advised of the passing of the Local Authority Loan (Rate of Interest) Bill, which prescribed that the rate of interest should be reduced 4 per cent on all loans not raised on August 1. N.Z. Counties’ Association forwarded circulars relating to explosives licenses, 1 inter county council circulars, and poi ts raised in connection with model by-laws and comment thereon. G. V. Pearce wrote stating that he did not intend to use a term in his last letter in an objectionable manner. Public Works Department asked if the Ccruncil would lease the room occupied by the stock inspector for a further term of three years, subject to rental being adjusted by an amount which would be charged to the Department in respect of the rates payable on that porti n of the building occupied by the Department. That is to say the borough would assess the value of the premises occupied and the Council would be relieved of the payment of sales by a like amount. —agreed to. N.Z. Counties’ Council Association forwarded opinion on payment of rates. The Council had no redress against the Land Board. Prime Minister forwarded a circular relative to unemployment, expressing appreciation of the part taken by local bodies in meeting the situation, and states that the wholehearted co-opera-tion between the local bodies, the Unemployment Board, and the community, was essential if the situation was to be met with a united front. Wanganui Automobile Association forwarded a circular letter regarding straying stock on highways.—The county’s ranger attended to the matter. Mr F. Langstone, M.P., sent, a copy of th Transport Licensing Bill, Mr A. E. Davey. Jerusalem, wrote denying that nis cattle were straying on the road as complained of The ranger reported on the cattle impounded and roads ranged over during the month. A number of remits on noxiou weeds were received from the N.Z. Farmers’ Union. G.P.0.. Wellington. forwarded accounts for £24 7s Id. being the Council’s subsidy on the Mangapurua telephone line. The deficiency on the working of the line was £4B 14s 2d. Engineer’s Report Th ; county engineer, Mr 11. L. Hogg, reported on the work done in the countv during the month of july. He stated: Tenders should bo called early in the season for further metalling on the Marumaru road, in the endeavour to complete the work before the metalling season ends. Should the new metal deposit on the Mangatiti West road prove satisfactory, it is very likely that a portion, or perhaps the whole of the next contract may be done from this pit. The haulage will be practically the same as from the Manganui River; it may, however, be necessary to crush the Mangatiti metal. It may be possible, under the new unemployment regulations, to employ relief workers on metalling, and other useful work, to give improved access to back country settlers. The principal work done has been slip-clearing, and other repairs to damage caused through the wet weather.
