JEWELLERY ROBBERY
SECOND MAN ARRESTED COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE [ Per Press Association. ] DUNEDIN, Aug. 10. The sensational jewel robbery from Stewart .Dawson and Co. in January, for which a man named Wilson was sentenced to four years in gaol in June, came forward again in the Police Court this morning, when his mate, ’William Newton, alias Sullivan, alias Burke, who was arrested ii? Christchurch, pleaded guilty to entering the shop and stealing £3999 worth of jewellery. The police evidence showed that Newton made a statement when brought here, in which he admitted the robbery. On Sunday night following the Saturday burglary, Newton went to Christchurch. Wilson went to Melbourne by the Mahcno. Wilson got £75 in Melbourne for his share, Newton receiving £lO from this on Wilson’s return. Newton’s share,'of the robbery was 79 rings, which he sold indiscriminately to people as bankrupt stock from’Napier. Thirty of these, he said, were beyond recovery, but he had supplied informa tion that might lead to the recovery of the remaining 49. Accused was committed for sentence.
