OPAWA AND CITY OF KIMBERLEY ENCOUNTERING HEAVY SWE LT> At noon on Friday the New Zealand Shipping Company’ motor liner Opawa, which is towing the disabled steamer City of Kimberley to Auckland, reported by wireless that she was 827 miles from Auckland, wns encountering n heavy westerly swell and that all was well. The two vessels aro expected to reach Auckland about Wednesday with favourable weather conditions. The City of Kimberley is a steel single-screw steamer of 6304 tons gross and was built at West Hartlepool, England, in ,1925. She is owned by the Ellcrman and Bucknail Shipping Company, Ltd. On her present voyage the vessel, which is running mder charter to the A. and A. Line, left New York on May 23 with a general merchandise cargo for discharge at Auckland, Napier. Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Sydney, and Melbourne, and was scheduled to reach Auckland on Juno 30. She previously visited Wellington in March, 1927. The Opawa is on route from Liverpool with a general merchandise cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers ami BlufT. to the agency of the Federal Company. She is one of the three new motor ships which were recently constructed for the New Zealand Shipping Company, the other two vessels, the Otaio and Orari, having already visited New Zealand. This is the Opawa’s maiden voyage and she sailed from Liverpool for Auckland on May 23, the same das that the City of Kimberley left Now York. She is a twin-screw motor ship about. 10,000 tons gross, and was launched from Messrs Alexander Stephens and Sons’ yard nt Linthouse, Glasgow, on January 29 last. ’The diverting of the Opawa ami the long tow to port, in addition to repairs to the City of Kimberley, will involve considerable expense) which will Im the subject of a general average. 'The amount of general average to bo declared will not be. announced until the local agents have received details regarding Ihe cargo on board the City of Kimberley, and an estimate has been u ndo of all costs likely to be incurred owing to the mishap.
