HYDRO WORKER’S DEATH
BLOW ON HEAD THE CAUSE. BODY FOUND NEAR HUT. [ Per Press Association.] OAMARU, June 28. When Edgar John Jamieson, aged 22, •was found dead outside his hut at the Waitaki hydro works on Thursday morning, it was thought that death was the result of heart failure. At an inquest yesterday a doctor gave evidence that death was the result of a haemorrhage of the brain, resultant upon a blow on the head. Witness could not give an indication as to the type of blow. A verdict was returned in accordance with that evidence. Rumours have been rife at the hydro works regarding Jamieson’s death, and acting upon instructions of district headquarters at Timaru, Sergeant Hall and a plain clothes constable left for the works this morning. Deceased was an amateur boxer and it is thought he might have received a blow during a recent bout.
When the body was found outside the hut it was frozen stiff, death having occurred some hours previously. A later messages states that the police have returned from the hydro works and it is understood that exhaustive enquiries failed to reveal anything to justify further action, it being taken as conclusive that the injury was received through a friendly boxing bout.
The rumours were probed to the bottom without avail.
