REDUCTION IN RATES. fPer Press Asseclation.] HASTINGS, June 26. The council has announced a reduc tion in the borough rates from 6.32 d in the £1 to 5<1 —a total of £BOOO. The gi neral rates arc lowered from 2LI to The Mayor says that the reduction is not an indiction of lower rate.for more than the current year, but the only measure of practical assistance to the ratepayers, many of whom sustained financial loss in tin* earthrjuake. The salaries of the borough staff of £5OO and above are reduced ten per cent, ami others five per rent. The total savings will be £lO,OOO. At the suggestion of Air ATaw.Mir (town planner), the Hastings Counci' last evening adopted a resolution in anticipation of the preparation and approval of a town-planning scheme. The resolution limits building to 60 feet in height, with a maximum of four stories, and makes compulsoiy provision fn r light and air space and other formal provisions.
