THE TURF

NAPIER PARK MEETING WINTER FIXTURE CLOSE PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY. (By ‘•Kestrel”). The second and concluding day of the Napier Park Pacing Club's winter meeting to-day has attracted fairly representative fields in the seven events on the card, and the day’s racing should be of an interesting nature. The first day’s form may give some iiidieat’Gn of the horses that, may run prominenfiy. In tho Waihiki Hack Hurdles the cbanr*: are that Honcut Heath (if started), Goshawk and lhe Varden may be in favour. Night Speaker and Navaho appeal in the greenmeadows Hack Handicap, while Moatoa may also be prominent. It is only a small field that will contest the Ladies’ Handicap, and this may suit Gaze and Kory Mor. There is quite a decent field in the Winter Oats Handicap, which is run over seven furlongs. Manifesto, Merry Mint and Royal Songster are three that should have friends. Over the “country” in the Park Steeplechase the chances are that Winter Day and Disrank, winners on • lie opening day, may share favouritism. Pangolin is one that may also !;?ve a say in the concluding stages. Ten are set down to contest the Trial Handicap, and as Dick Whittingt »n was accounted rather unlucky not to win outright on Thursday bo may be tho elect of backers. Crown Jest and Silver Fern should also go well. To conclude the day’s racing there is the Newstead Handicap, in which the chances of Chief Savage and Kasouli appeal. The following is a list of the acceptors for to day: WAIOHIKI HACK HURDLES (Of £100; 1% miles.)

TAUMARUNUI CLUB MEETING AT ELLERSLIE ACCEPTORS FOR SATURDAY [Per Pres. Association.! AUCKLAND, June 26. HUNTERS’ HURDLES (Of £130; two miles.)

For the Winter Cup At Riccarton on Wednesday morning Royal Love, with Solwit in tho early part, and brought home by Manetho was stretched out over seven furlongs He covered the last six in 1.16, and was travelling in bold style all the way. He should be hard to beat al Ashburton to-day. Royal Love is con side red one of the most likely of the Riccarton horses for the Winter Cup.

NOTES AND COMMENTS (By "KESTREL:') j The concluding day of the Napier Park Racing Club’s winter meetingwill occupy attention to-day, while the Ashburton County Racing Club will also hold their meeting to-day. Next week the Oamaru Jockey Club will hold their winter meeting on Saturday. The acceptances closed on Wednesday night, which, considering the fact that the Ashburton meeting intervenes, is scarcely fair to owners and trainers with horses engaged at both meetings. Taumarunui Meeting. A special race meeting for the Taumarunui Racing Club wi I be held ac the Ellerslie course on Saturday ana Monday next. The acceptances for the first day of the meeting appear this morning. Belvoir Gallops A Christchurch correspondent states that on Wednesday morning at Riccarton the two-year-old Belvoir, assisted over the last part by Shatter, was responsible for five furlongs in 1.2. He did his work well and is in good order to get some money very soon. By the way, Belvoir is still owned by Mr G. F. Moore, the negotiations for his purchase having not reached finality. It is understood that it would require a good four-figure sum to effect a sale. Lord Vai at Trentham. Among those entered for hack events at Trentham is Lord Vai. If this promising chap has gono on the right way since the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie he should be seen to advantage. At the Waikato autumn meeting ho ran two good races, being second to Rafflight over seven furlongs and occupying

a similar position to Indolent over a mile on the second day. At the last Great Northern meeting Lord Vai finished third in the second division of the Jervois Handicap, seven furlongs, and dead-heated with Pewa for first place in the Eitzroy Handicap, one mile. He is a very free goer and one of the most promising hacks seen in the northern province recently. St. Warrigal Among the nominations for the Wellington Steeplechase is St. Warrigal, who is sure to go well if he is produced. He is a good jumper and hangs on well. He was practically an unknown quantity at the Great Northern meeting last year, but he ran third in both the Green Lane and the Tamaki Steeplechase to Master Lu and Lucess. This season he won the King Country Steeplecheese at Te Awamutu, but fell on the second day, while, owing to injuring one of his feet, ho was not started at the Great Northern meeting, at which he was handicapped at the minimum (9.0) in the Great Northern Steeplechase. At the recent Waikato meeting on the first day he had the misfortune to slip on the flat, but on the second day won the Hamilton Steeplechase, three miles, in good style. For Taumarunui After his good showing in the Hillside Handicap, run over eight furlongs, at the recent Waikato meeting, Te Hoia looks like making an early return to the winning list, and if brought down to the Taumarunui meeting some stakemoney should come his way. He is gaged in the principal flat event on the first day, and, although he has no previous credentials over a mile and a quarter, the distance should not be beyond him. Te Hoia is a very solid. customer, and racing under the higher scale of weights is not likely to affect him. Taneriri’s Next Two seasons ago Taneriri ran second to Paddon in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham and he has again been nominated for that event next month. This horse ran well at the Great Northern meeting, being fourth in the Cornwall Handicap, one mile and a quarter, while he won the King George Handicap, one mile, and was second in the York Handicap, seven furlongs, on the last day. He has gone on the right way since then, and as he has previously shown a liking for the Trentham course he should go well in his engagements, which also include the Parliamentary Handicap. | Fabriano Reappears Fabriano has been accorded a nomination for the Wellington steeplechase next month. He proved himself a good jumper a couple of seasons ago. Fabriano won a steeplechase at Riverton, the Otago Steeplechase and the Dune- ) din Steeplechase at Wingatui, while he was second in the Wingatui Steeplechase at the same meeting. He was brought up to Wellington for the Wellington Steeplechase, and he and King’s Guard had the finish to themselves, the others being a good way back. Fabriano came right over on King’s Guard after crossing the last fence and the pair stayed together for the remainder of the race, King’s Guard having his head in front at the finish. At the following Grand National meeting he ran third to Wiltshire and Matu in the gig steeplechase and won the Beaufort Steeplechase, while he finished third in the Lincoln Steeplechase at the same fixture. He had a couple of races at the last Dunedin meeting, finishing fourth in the Dunedin Steeplchase. Likes Trentham Town Major was one of the best performers seen out last winter, for in his last five starts at the end of last season he won four events and was second on the other occasion. At Trentham he won the Te Aro Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, very easily, while the Seatoun Handicap, of similar distance, went to him on the second day, and he was only beaten by half a head by Taboo in the Winter Oats on the concluding day. He annexed a mile race at Waimate in his next start, and wound up the season by easily accounting for ti e Claremont Handicap, one mile, at the South Canterbury meeting. His most recent success was in the Easter Handicap, nine furlongs, at Riverton, in which he beat a fairly useful field. Town Major has again been entered for the Wellington meeting, and if approaching the condition he was in this , time last year would take a lot of beating‘ _
