Il was announced at the annual nice.ing of the Royal Geographical Society that the King has approved of the. award of a Founder’s Medal to Mr Herl ram Thomas for geographical work in Arabia, and his successful crossing for the first time of the Rul»a el-Khali Dkosert. in South Arabia; also a Patron's Medal to Rear-Admiral Richard Byrd, of the United States Navy, for his Antarctic expedition and flight oxer both the North and South Poles. Mr .Bertram Thomas, who is financial adviser to the Sultan, of Muscat and Oman, has made a number of ex ploration trips in the desert lands of Arabia, but his crossing of Ruba elKhali early this year is his most strik ing achievement. He collected many valuable geological and natural historv specimens which he has presented to the British Museum.
