THE WANGAEHU HILL
PVR months past men have been employed in re-grading and
improving the formation of the Wangaehu Hill Road. The result of their labours is now made manifest as the work of improvement comes nearer to completion. Soon the difficulties of the old road will become a thing of the past, the memory of them will fade, and traffic will pass over the grades on either side of the valley of the Wangaehu, accepting all the comforts and convenience supplied by the skill of the engineer and the toil of the road constructor. In that day will be heard grumblings at the lack of other improvements of which to-day we are quite unmindful. But that is how the world goes on, for it is in the desire for improvement, possibly born of discontent with present conditions, that humanity moves forward to ever-increas-ing comfort and facility.
Just now, because the, discomforts of the old gradients are fresh in our memories, we are thankful to the local body, in this case the Wanganui County Council, and to the engineers and construction workers for their good work. It is well, therefore, to express our thanks at this present, for if we do not we shall Hud ourselves immersed in our desire for something still better. We are indeed ungrateful creatures, although that is the last thing wc intend to be.
The Wangaehu Hill Road is another step in the betterment of our country, and wc should appreciate the efforts of the sons of Martha who perform this work so that the sons of Mary mav go by in comfort.
