FROM THE LOG:— HUNTINGDON DELAYED. Loading at Port Chalmers, the Federal liner Huntingdon has been delayed by rain. She was to get away yesterday for Bluff, and will later proceed to Timaru, Lyttelton, Wanganui, and Wellington. ORARI’S FAST PASSAGE. Leaving Gisborne at 11 p.m. on June 1 for London, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s new motor vessel Orasi arrived at Balboa on the morning of June 19—a run of 17*4 days. This time is remarkably fast, as for the distance ships usually take 19 to 21 days. The Orari sailed from Colon on the same day. THE MATAI. The Government steamer Matai was scheduled to leave Auckland for the Hauraki Gulf on Monday morning to attend the buoys and beacons as far north as Moko Hinau Island. She wil return to port toward the end of the week to load stores for northern lighthouses. SYDNEY MARU FOR NEW ZEALAND. The Japanese motor ship Sydney Maru, en route from Japan, left Manila on June 7 for Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne. Wellington, and Auckland. She is due at Wellington on July 4. THE TANKER MITTELMEER. The German motor tanker Mittelmeer arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on Saturday morning with a full cargo of bulk petrol for the Shell Company. The vessel is due at Wellington this morning from Auckland to complete discharge. This is the vessel’s second visit to Wellington. She was previously at that port in January, 1930. PORT WAIKATO’S MOVEMENTS. The intercolonial motor ship Port Waikato was to leave Whangarei on June 17 for Port Stephens and Newcastle to load a timber cargo for Auckland, Lyttelton, and Timaru. CHANGES IN TRAFFIC ROUTES The ocean routes aiong which overseas trade makes its way have undoubtedly changed in direction since pre-war days, and in all probability will change even more in the course of the next 20 years (states Tho Shipping World). The opening of the Suez Canal modified greatly the routing of traffic between Europe and tho East, and as a secondary factor to the advent of steam, hastened the end of the sailing ship. The opening of tho Panama Canal, later on, had a profound effect on tho time-distance between Europe and tho Western seaboard of the Pacific ami New Zealand. Because of its proximity to cheap oil-fuelling stations, is it possible that the Panama Canal will have an effect on the future of the coal burning ship? Already much of lhe traffic from Europe which passes through Iho Panama Canal consists of Diesel-driven tonnage, whether its destination is the Pacific. Coast of North America, the West Coast of South America, or New Zealand. An interesting fixture was recently reported on the open markets. This was a 7500-ton motor vessel from Darien to BordeauxHamburg, via the Panama Canal. Hitherto the traffic in beans from Manchuria had been carried via Suez, ami though the route via Panama is several hun--1 lre<l miles longer, it is held that cheap I supplies (tf oil on the route and lower dues in the Panama Canal more, than 1 make up for the greater distance that has to be covered. Tn the past, the j rivalry between coal and oil has been based largely on factors of an engin--1 oering nature, but the fixture referred , Io at least suggests that tho factor of , geography is going to have its influ- ■ enre in the future, and this opens up many interesting possibilities.
