THE WAGES “CUT”
TALLY CLERK’S APPEAL I Per Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 24. Tally clerks employed at Lyttelton applied to the Arbirtation Court today fur exemption from the wages cut. The special ground on which the application was made was that the casual nature of the work warranted exemption, and the imposition of the reduction ».ould ause undue hardship. Counsel '’or the Union said that from various causes, including bulk importation of petrol, the work available for tally' chirks had declined. After taking into consider n deductions from wages, the average amount paid to tally clerks was £2 6s lOd weekly. Counsel for the employers said that the casual nature of the employment ami undue hardships had been already argued in Wellington. The picture had been painted a little too black. The weekly' avenge wage this year was £3 Ils ]od over all. After argument between the advocates, his Honour said the average weekly wage this year was £2 Ils Id. Judgment was reserved.
