“SCH-O-O-L! SCH-O-O-L!”
COLLEGE RUG3Z MATCH ) FUNDS FOR UNEMPLOYED It was refreshing to sec the Collegiate School and Technical College Rugby teams playing on Spriggens Park ye 'erday. Not since 1926 has the School team forsaken its own ground while playing • in Wanganui, and there was a general 1 feeling of approval of the action of the headmaster (Rev. C. F. Pierce) in departing from the usual custom. 1 School Rugby has a widespread appeal. It stands apart from the type of game that io overshadowed b - that spirit of “win nt, any r,'»sf.” The retd competitive element rises paramount, and the cry of “srho ’, school!” creates an atmosphere that doe; good for the game in a period when the tendency to refrain from urging the sides on from the toue’iline. More than a few who attended yesterday’s match came away with the hope that the two schools would use Spriggens Park more often. Tho City Treasurer (Mr W. Alitchcll) had charge the collection boxes used yesterday by the Junior Victoria League to gather proceeds for the Alayor’s Unemployment Relief Fund. He reported to th'’ Welcome Week Conunittc' last night that the total proceeds amounted to 343 13s 6DL which sum has been credited to the most pressin cause of . ie day. The total was made up as follows: Notes £1; half-crown £1 10s; florins £4 10s; shillings £ll ss; sixpences £l5 14s; threepences £5 18s 3d; pennies 15s 3d, and halfpennies Is OJd. The committee was indebted to the following members of the Junior Victoria League for their efforts with the boxes: ‘Misses Ziesler (2'. Russell, AlcDonald, Ballingall, Thomas, Burgess, Franklin. Wilson and Strachan. At the half-time the president of Welcome Week (Mr D. E. Dustin) spoke to the teams oi the field, presenting “Good Citizens’ ” badges to Air f. E. Newton, headmaster of the Technical College and Mr H. G. Carver, Rugby coach of tho Collegiate School. He also handed sufficient badges to these two gentlemen to decorate the members nf the teams.
