LORD MAYOR OF LONDON
It was upon Thomas Legge in 1354 that the title of “Lord” was first conferred in addition to that, of “Mayor” of London. Sixty-two persons held the office of Mayor of London before 1351. Henry Fitz Alwyn, the first Lord Mayor of London, was appointed by the Crown in 1188, and he continued in office for 24 years. Prior to 1188 the chii ’ official of London was called the Portreeve.
