As a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr Frank Crotty, members of the management committee of the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union titood in silence for a moment at the weekly meeting last night.

Mrs Wilfred Andrews and Mr Dennis Sheard, of Wellington, soloists for the “Tale of Old Japan,” to-night, arrived in Wanganui yesterday afternoun and were entertained at. afternoon tea by the committee of the Choral Society.

Speaking from the stage at the eno of the comedy staged by Wanganui amateurs last evening, the producer, Mr Paul Latham, made feeling reference the recent, passing of one so popular oi. the Wanganui amateur stage — Mr Frank Crotty. The. death occurred a few days ago in the New’ Plymouth Public Hospital, at the age ot 78 years, of Mr James O. Taylor. The deceased resided in the Woodville district for many years, and carried on the business of a nurseryman in Bakerstown. He was Mayor of Woodville on two or three occasions, and twice unsuccessfully contested the Pahiatua seat. Some years ago he left for the Taranaki district. Bo is survived by a widow and large family. His brother, the late Mr Charles Taylor, formerly owned the Riverbank estate near Woodville.

AL Paul A. Serre, Consul for France in New Zealand ami its dependencies, has reached the retiring age. He will be succeeded at the end of the month by AL Edouard Al. V. AL Joubert, who has recently held the post of French Consul at Prague. Czecho-Slovakia. AL Serre arrived in Auckland a little more than eight, years ago. Ho had previously held consular position in California, China, Java, Cuba, Porto Rico, Uruguay, Brazil. Trinidad, ami Costa Rica, and his period of service now covers 35 years. AT. Serre has been elected dean of the Consular Corps in Auckland three times in succession. Fifteen years ago ho was elected dean in Port of Spain, and ho has had a distinguished career. He held eleven distinctions conferred on him by different governments. AL Joubert, is 49 years of age and has served at Bremen. Rotterdam and Prague. Be has been in Prague for 12 years. Like Af. Serre, he is a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Bp also holds the French military distinction, the Croix de Guerre.
